Florida’s 2010 race for governor is looking a little more competitive.
A new Rasmussen reports telephone survey in the state shows state Attorney General Bill McCollum, a Republican, ahead of Democrat Alex Sink 44% to 39%. In October, McCollum had a 46% to 35% lead.
Five percent (5%) like some other candidate, and 12% are undecided.
Sink, the state’s chief financial officer and the best-known of the Democrats who have announced for the race, is hoping to be Florida’s first woman governor. McCollum was a member of the U.S. Congress for 20 years before quitting to run unsuccessfully for the GOP Senate nomination in 2004. He faces little opposition so far for his party’s nomination.

Current Governor Charlie Crist chose not to seek reelection and is running for the U.S. Senate next year. Once considered a shoo-in for his party’s nomination, Crist is now in a neck-and-neck GOP Senate Primary race with former state House Speaker Marco Rubio.
McCollum leads by nine points among male voters and breaks roughly even with Sink among female voters. The Republican carries voters not affiliated with either party by more than two-to-one.
Twenty-two percent (22%) of Florida voters have very favorable opinion of McCollum, while seven percent (7%) view him very unfavorably. Sink is regarded very favorably by 21% and very unfavorably by 11%. The very favorable ratings for both McCollum and Sink have risen since October.
At this very early stage of the campaign, Rasmussen Reports considers the very favorable and very unfavorable figures more significant than the overall favorability totals.
Crist continues to draw mixed reviews. Fifty-two percent (52%) approve of the job he is doing as governor, while 45% disapprove. But those who strongly disapprove outnumber those who strongly approve by better than two-to-one - 20% to nine percent (9%).
Barack Obama carried Florida by two points in November 2008, 51% to 49%. But now just 44% approve of the president’s job performance, while 55% disapprove of the job he is doing. More importantly, 46% strongly disapprove versus 29% who strongly approve. This is roughly in line with Obama’s job approval ratings nationally in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll.
Rasmussen Reports has released recent polls on the 2010 governor’s races in Arizona, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas.
