This week, Florida Democrats worked with President Obama to pass historic health insurance reform. But the response from leading Republicans in Florida is to work as hard as they can to repeal it.
The perfect example is Attorney General Bill McCollum, who has yet to offer any comprehensive plans to address the most serious issues Floridians face or even offer his vision on creating jobs in Florida - but he has taken the time to use taxpayer dollars to pursue a politically-motivated lawsuit to stop health insurance reform.
He has even gone as far as to give a no-bid contract to one of his former Washington D.C. lobbying partners to help him with his political grandstanding. But, he may not have even taken the time to follow the law by consulting with Florida's members of Congress before filing the lawsuit - as Florida law requires.
McCollum is desperate to appeal to his political base to get media exposure for his campaign - he is putting his own ambition over what is right for Florida voters. We have to stop these political games and attacks on insurance reform now.
In just 5 days we will have our first major fundraising deadline of the election year and we need your help to make sure we are ready to fight back against their political attacks. Your $5 donation will help us show Democrats are ready to win in November.

Bill McCollum isn't alone. Governor Charlie Crist and former Speaker Marco Rubio are also some of the loudest members of the repeal caucus of the Republican Party as they fight to appeal to extreme right-wing voters in their Senate primary.
While we know that McCollum, Crist, and Rubio are fighting to:

  • Take away health coverage to 32 million Americans
  • Re-open the Medicare Part D 'donut hole' for 565,000 Floridians
  • Raise taxes on 216,000 small businesses in Florida.
  • Allow millions of Florida children to be denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions
We need the resources to ensure all Floridians learn of their schemes to block or repeal President Obama's historic health insurance reforms.
We have a chance to defeat these politicians all in one of the most critical elections we have faced in Florida in our lifetime. With every statewide office open - including the Governor's Office and a U.S. Senate seat - we have a chance to stop these tactics now.

The difference couldn't be clearer between these Republican politicians and our Democratic elected leaders in Florida.
Just last week, CFO Alex Sink laid out her Business Plan for Florida to help create jobs and improve our economy. So while Bill McCollum was on Fox News talking about his frivolous lawsuit - Alex Sink was traveling the state talking to Floridians about her vision to revitalize our economy.
Six days ago, Kendrick Meek proudly cast his vote for the historic health insurance reform. Meanwhile, Marco Rubio and Charlie Crist were attacking each other to appeal to the "Tea Party" activists and extreme rightwing Republicans, rather than focusing of bring jobs to Florida.
We need to support these strong Democratic leaders - not the political games standing in the way of the change we voted for in 2008.

That was the poignant assertion made today by U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., who announced on the Senate floor this afternoon that despite his misgivings and the health-care legislation’s flaws he would vote for its passage.

“We are not put on Earth for ourselves, but we are placed here for each other,” Nelson said in a seven-minute speech on the floor.  “Here we are - debating legislation that stands to improve the lives of tens of millions of Americans.  And so, despite its flaws, I will vote to pass this legislation.”More...

In just two days it will be 2010, and I have no doubt in my mind that when the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve we will be starting an historic year in Florida.
The election next November will be another one that we will tell our grandchildren about. You've heard talk about the 2010 election before. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change Florida for the better; with every statewide elected office open, a U.S. Senate seat, and many state legislative races up for grabs.
But, the political landscape is not why I am sure that we are set to make history when the clock strikes midnight- it's because of you.
You and thousands of other Floridians have decided to help shape our destiny as a state and broken a record for the number of grassroots donors for our Party. If you include all the people that have given to our candidates it's been an amazing year for Democrats. We are coming together to make history in Florida.
Let's finish the year with a bang before midnight tomorrow and show everyone that we are ready to win next November.
There isn't a more important time to build our party for the next election. The historic opportunity we have isn't just a chance to make electoral change, but to change the course of our state.
We all know the last two governors haven't built a solid foundation for our future - just look around at our own friends and neighbors. Too many Floridians are suffering, looking for jobs, and trying to hold on to their homes.
We need to win because it gives us the opportunity to change the face of Florida with new leaders like Alex Sink, Kendrick Meek, and other strong Democrats up and down the ballot.
The only way we are ever going to do that is with your help and the help of thousands of Floridians like you. We have already made our own little piece of history this year - but let's reach even higher - so we can make a lot more history next year.

Since over 4,500 of you stood up and asked Governor Crist to put his job as Governor over his personal ambition he's shown no sign of heading our call. In fact he joined his handpicked political crony Senator George LeMieux for a fundraiser in Washington D.C.
Earlier this week, we asked you to help us combat their collusion with the only thing Governor Crist does these days - raising money. But to win next November we need to go one step further: We need to get organized and spread the message.

For the past few weeks Floridians from all over the state have been coming together to fulfill the promise of change we voted for last November by helping the President pass real health care reform.

We have great Democratic leaders that are already fighting for health care reform, but like the 2008 campaign we also have thousands of people like you working in their own neighborhoods to spread the message about how we need health care reform now.

As Florida Democrats our work for change didn't stop last November - with the need to change Tallahassee and the need. Your help over the last few months has shown that I know we can do it.

Florida's families and small businesses are being crushed by sky-rocketing health care costs, and we are losing the choices we value most. Forty-five million Americans don't have health insurance.  In Florida, nearly 21 percent of our friends and neighbors lack insurance, making Florida 48th in the nation with only Texas and New Mexico having a higher percent of uninsured residents. Families' benefits are eroding because they can't keep up with higher premiums, co-pays and deductibles. Seniors are choosing to cut their medications in half due to the high cost of prescription drugs.  And parents are skipping a doctor's visit for their children because it's just too expensive. That's why President Obama needs your help.

After visiting Florida a couple weeks ago, DNC Chairman Tim Kaine recorded a special video update for you on the ongoing campaign to pass real health care reform.

As a member of Congress I worked on health care reform for years and I know how important it is for the people to get involved and make sure that all our leaders know that we need work with President Obama to pass real health care reform.
